CHAMBERLAND HEADS INTO STUDIO TO START LAYING DOWN TRACKS FOR THE OPEN MIND REUNION CD.

OPEN MIND, the brainchild of Cynthia Kerr (songwriter and second vocals) and Chantal Chamberland (songwriter - lead vocals) quickly became one of Southern Ontario’s hottest duos in the 90’s.
Thrown into the national spotlight in 1990 with the release of their video/single “Give Us Back The Night”, a protest song about violence against women. The duo followed with the release of their first CD, The Stones we Carry, in 1991.

Sharing stages with Canada’s most popular bands, such as Junkhouse, Crash Vegas, Spirit of the West and the Barenaked Ladies, introduced OPEN MIND to a whole new audience. The highlight of their performing career was being invited to open for and tour with Sarah McLachlan (Solace Tour).

Before long, this powerful duo produced a second CD, “Suspect Terrain”, and won coveted spots on some of Canada’s top folk festivals, including Winnipeg Folk Festival, Edmonton Folk Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, It’s Your Festival, and toured throughout North America appearing at college campuses and coffee houses.
As the momentum was building behind this powerful and talented duo, Open Mind released their third and final CD, Live at La Luna as Kerr had made the difficult decision to move to Australia.
Chamberland, after a hiatus from the music, threw herself in a new musical direction and has earned her place as one of Canada’s top Jazz recording artists.

2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Open Mind and with Kerr still residing in Australia and Chamberland in Canada, the duo has been writing new material as well as revisiting some of their past catalogue over the internet.

The last week of October, Chamberland will heading to Grant Ave studio in Hamilton, Ontario, where Open Mind first started, to begin laying down the new material with a handful of musicians and reconnecting with the producer of her first 3 jazz recordings, Bob Doidge. Kerr will be sent the recordings in Australia and will add her vocals and guitar to the tracks.

Loved for their mesmerizing harmonies and thought provoking original songs, Open Mind will be releasing their reunion CD in early spring of 2010, with tour proposed to follow in the summer.

Chantal featured on Putumayo’s Jazz Around the World compilation CD to be released October 27, 2009

The fascinating global journey of jazz is one of music’s most remarkable stories. Putumayo’s newest release, Jazz Around the World, showcases the powerful influence of jazz on musicians across the globe. Featuring both well established and newer artists performing extraordinary covers and originals, this collection incorporates a wide range of rhythms, instruments and melodies into a constantly evolving genre. With ancestral roots in Africa, jazz flowered into a dynamic force in the United States throughout the 20th century. And, over the years, it has borrowed from, influenced and blended with musical traditions around the world.

CHANTAL CHAMBERLAND AT HUGH’S ROOM
SEPTEMBER 13, 2006
8:30PM

Chantal Chamberland’s latest recording, Dripping Indigo was released at the beginning of February to great critical acclaim. This album is a marvelous collection of some beloved standards and is supported by wonderful production from one of the great producers, Canada’s Bob Doidge.

Although the official release of Dripping Indigo was earlier this year, Chantal was unable to do the usual round of media engagements due to undergoing foot surgery. Chantal, who appears during the Montreal International Jazz Festival on July 1 is now confirmed to make her Toronto debut at this city’s most prestigious listening room, Hugh’s Room on Wednesday, September 13. Accompanying this sultry singer/guitarist will be Dan Lockwood, drums; Steve Pelletier, upright bass; Eric Boucher, piano and Paul White, alto sax.

Chantal Chamberland is one of the brightest stars in the vocal jazz world today and with the calibre of musicians accompanying her is someone you do not want to miss.

AllAboutJazz.com says, “Chantal Chamberland has a warm, toasty voice that can light up a dark nightclub and send a glow through her audience. …(Dripping Indigo) is a fine showcase for a singer who deserves more attention.”

TheLiveMusicReport.com calls Chantal’s voice, “…low, breathy single-malt vocals. The two French songs (and her French singing) are absolutely spectacular! There appear to be two singers present on this CD, and I would pay top dollar to listen to the French one anytime, anywhere…”

Gene Stevens, Program Director, AM 740 says, “I listened to it in the car last night, driving around – beautiful voice, good song selection too. Very nice job.”

Chantal Chamberland at Hugh’s Room, 2261 Dundas Street West, Wednesday, September 13 at 8:30PM. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 at the door. Reservations are recommended. The food is excellent and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Call 416.531.6604.
